Use Homebrew to enhance your Adventurers League Magic Items

Many AL adventures award magic items with properties you want on your character sheet. With Homebrew, you can make it happen

Creating a Homebrew Item

Many Adventurers League modules award magic items with some extra flavor text, and some extra properties - skill in a Language, or perhaps Guardian for an initiative bonus. These can be a pain (or impossible) to customize on the character sheet, but you can Create a Homebrew item with the extra bonus to fill in the gap.

Setting Up

First, you have to have a D&D Beyond account that allows you to create homebrew items. Sorry, those are the rules. Then, edit your character, and under the Home section, make sure you have Homebrew selected.

Creating a Homebrew Item

Pyn, my Rogue, found some Boots of Speed with the Guardian property, that gives a +2 bonus to initiative. Under Play D&D, select Browse Homebrew, then in the Magic Items panel you will see a Create Homebrew Magic Item. Click that, find Boots of Speed, and you get a fully functional item, ready to add to your character sheet, once you set up the bonuses. The first page will show you the standard elements you can change, like the name, the descriptive text, and so on. Change those as you wish, but here we are interested in the buttons below. Here you can add all the modifiers, conditions, or spells that the characters can support:. One caveat - as an IP-protection measure, if your item is too close to an existing item, you will not be able to share it with others. That is not a problem here, because you are creating this item for your own use.

Homebrew Item Modifieres

The Guardian property adds +2 to initiative, so that is a Modifier. Click Add Modifiers. Modifiers represents this as a Bonus to Initiative with a Fixed Value of 2. Fill that out, and save.

Save your modifiers, Save your item, and wait a few minutes. It takes a bit for the item to become available on your character sheet.

When it becomes available, and you add, equip, and attune your shiny new boots, your initiative will go up by 2. When you unattune/unequip, it goes away.

Enjoy your Adventurers League-enhanced Familiar’s Boots!
